Same question as Ms. Susan, except we would be on the mountain on August 15 afternoon or August 16 morning, traveling between Xi'an and Longmen Caves. I'd like to see the mountain, I think the only one we'll be able to visit, but the description is scary. We'd take the cable car up and had thought to hike a little, but it sounds like all trails from North Peak are steep staircases. Can you even get to Quinxian Temple (or another) without the steep stairs and steel cable? If not, is it worthwhile just to go up on the cable car to North Peak (for the view)? And is there a place to wait there comfortably if my son and husband do hike around? How much time should we allow for this excursion, from arrival in the train station until returning to the station (assuming we take a taxi to get to and from the mountain base)?

I just say it's quite steep. Climb is a process of experience and the sightseeing can always come into your view along the way. If your shchedule is very tight or you are not very energetic, I think going up on the cable car to North Peak is still worthwhile. From North Peak, you can go to the rest of the four peaks and each of them has a distinctive features. Or you can select the peaks you are interested in and go back to the North peak to take cable car down to the mountains. You can always easily find somewhere to rest and wait.

Let me show you the time. Taking a taxi from Xian railway station to the Mt. Hua needs at least 1.5 hours for one way (a roundtrip needs 3 hours) if not having any transportation problem. I presume you need at least 3-4 hours in the moutain.
