About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I live and work in Meizhou, Guangdong and have to go to HK to renew my visa as it expired eariler than they could process the working permit. However I am here with my 7 month old son and his visa is now expired also. Is it necessary to bring him to HK with me to renew his visa or will his passport (visa included) picture and birth cert do? Also are there any closer places to renew a visa in China, or is HK the only option. This whole thing makes me feel like such an idiot for letting this happen and wait so long and it's not my first time working in China...

Yes, it is necessary for you to bring your son to Hong Kong to renew China visa for you two, if you don't bring him to Hong Kong, there is not exit stamp on his passport, visa officer in Hong Kong will guess that your son overstay in China. HK is near to Meizhou, Guangzhou, it is Ok for you to get a China visa in HK.
