When you apply for Chinese visa, your passport has at least 6 months valdity, otherwise, you can't get a Chinese visa. Please bear in mind that a single entry tourist visa is only valid for 3 months, you can't apply for Chinese visa too early, otherwise, it will expires before you enter China. So if you apply for Chinese visa in late April, the passport has 6 months validity, however, when you go to China in August, the visa has expired.
