i am an american citizen and i will studying in shanghai in a as a post-graduate traditional chinese medicine; i will have a student visa; i have a wife and two children-- will they be able to stay on my student visa? if not, what type of visa should we apply for?

You can't stay on your student visa, you should apply for X visa as your dependants, the marriage liense and birth certificate are required for gettting the X visa for them, please send them the copy of your student visa and passport, they also should prepare their paspsort and each one fill one Visa Application Form affixed with each one's photo.
