About:How to Choose China Train Ticket Types?

I am thinking of travelling into Shanghai at the start of July and then travel down to Beijing. Which train is best for this an can you book tickets in advance from outside of China? - I have heard there are agencies you can use for this but how safe are they?
Are you guarenteed to get on a certain train or is it first come first served on the day?
How likely are you to get a two seater as well?
Is it maybe just better to pay more and fly? Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Hi, you can search the train schedule from Shanghai to Beijing on this website. But I don't think you can reserve it online. I've read that you can try to book the train ticket from the hotel you are going to stay in Shanghai. By the way, most schools start summer holiday in July, so train tickets may be hard to be purchased.

There are T Trains from Shanghai to Beijing. I took the one leaving around 10:00 PM and arrived in Beijing at about 11 AM. It is a good sleeper with only one stop I believe. You can buy the tickets about 7 days ahead and that's very important during the summer holidays. Soft sleeper is best because there are only 4 beds in those compartments.

HARD SLEEPER CNY/USD SOFT SLEEPER CNY/USD SEAT CNY/USD
Upper berth 306/ 45 Upper berth 478/ 70 Hard 179/ 26
Middle berth 317/ 46 Lower berth 499/ 73 Soft 283/ 42
Lower berth 327/ 48
