Hi there,

I'd like to know if its neccessary to agree on the cost when hiring a rickshaw or is it set pricing.

It is certainly not a setting price. You'd better agree on the payment before boarding the rickshaw.

i dont know anymore their prices but im sure its high. they are going to get what they can out of you. I heard it was 100 rmb per person recently. which i think is a big rip off. its not a long tour and i've ridden my bike through their part of the hutongs and many more.
the hutong part of beijing is quite large. they only show you part of it in the HOUHAI area.

but its still fun and interesting.

Usually, they charge very much so that you need to bargain.
