About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I just tried to call the Chinies Embassy in Washington DC, USA, but no one picked up. I am (Indian Citizen with green card) Assistant professor and working as staff scientist at Nebraska State, Omaha. I was invited to give a talk at BITs 7th Annual Congress of international Drug Discovery Science and Technology (IDDST) held at Shanghai, China betewwn October 22-25, 2009. So I would like to know what documents I need to submit in order to get a visa for China and I also like to know the type of VISA I need to apply and where to apply (which consulate)
