Also, I've read that it will be very cold on the boat in November - is that true?  Perhaps I should consider visiting another region/city instead of the cruise.

Since November is the early winter in China, most part of China is cold. It is cold on the cruise because of the wind, and the cruise line may be influenced by the low water level in winter. The best time to take the cruise tour is from May to October.
