Question

I am a US citizen living in Geneva working at the UN. I wish to travel to China as a tourist, I was told by the people working at the AMEX office in Geneva that I needed a letter from the hotels where I would be staying in order to get a tourist visa. However, neither of my friends from the US that I was planning on traveling with in China had to do this. Is this a requirement or not?

Under the current situation ,(swine flu) the confirmed hotel booking proof may be required.
