About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China 240 hour free visa transit

Greetings. Does SFO-Hongkong-Shanghai(departure), and Shanghai(return)-Taipai-SFO qualify for the 10 day visa free transit? Note Hongkong and Taipai are merely layover ports, and SFO (USA) is the ultimate origin and destination. Is there an official China document about this? Thanks!

Yes, your itinerary definitely qualifies for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. The essence of 240 hour visa free transit is that the immediate points (regardless of their nature because they can be just a short layover or a long stay) before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. In your case you have two different eligible territories as your immediate points before and after mainland China and they are Hong Kong and Taiwan. It is totally irrelevant what happens with your itinerary before and after your immediate points. You can find an official document on official website of Chinese National Immigration Administration website (please, copy and paste the link): https://en.nia.gov.cn/ . Have a nice visit to China.
