Yes, your itinerary is eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, but you should take care that your flight from China to Dallas does not have any kind of landing in Japan. If we are talking about American Airlines flight AA128, then we have a perfect situation. I wish you a nice visit to China.

i qualify for the 240 hour free China visa. Do I need to notify the airline that I'm using to fly into china? Is there anything i need to do or fill prior to catching my flight to China? As I said I will be flying from Japan to china staying 9 days and then flying back to Dallas on American airlines flight 128. I just want to be sure I have everything I need to enter China. Do I just fill out my Arrival/Departure card one I land or can I do it prior to landing? Thank you for you help.

You do not have to do anything in advance nor you need to notify your airline. You should just board your flight and enjoy your time. All the formalities will be performed, arrival card included, upon your landing in China. You should just have your exit ticket, a flight to Dallas ready to be presented to the Chinese immigration. It is highly advisable to have your ticket (booking confirmation) as a printout or at least as a screenshot on your smartphone. Have a wonderful visit to China.
