About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

240 Hours Visa Free to China

We fly from US to HK arrive at 7:00AM and bought a separate airfare to enter Xian the same day (around noon). Stay 3 days in Xian and fly to Shanghai for 4 days and visit Water Town for 1 day. Fly out from Shanghai to Taipei and to US.
My question is, can we arrive in HK and fly to China the same day?
Two members of our family already have visa, and two members would like to go with visa free. When we make hotel reservations, do we need to do two bookings because the hotels need to register the visa free members? Thanks.

If your itinerary is:

US - Hong Kong - mainland China - Taipei - US

And your flight from Shanghai does not lands in Hong Kong on your way from Shanghai to Taipei, your itinerary is definitely and undeniably eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and yu do not need a visa of any kind.

The length of your layover in Hong Kong does not have any relation with 240 hour visa free transit eligibility. Also, it is perfectly fine in the eyes of Hong Kong immigration authorities. They simply do not care if the layover is long just a couple of hours or it is measured in days. The mainland Chinese authorities really do not care if you have arrived in mainland China on the same day when you have arrived in Hong Kong too. This is simply irrelevant.

You do not have to do separate bookings. It can be all a single booking. There is no need to do it twice (separately). It the mainland Chinese authorities will want to see the bookings, they will easily find those traveling visa free within a single booking.

Just to conclude, your itinerary is fine and eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you are really good to go. Have a wonderful visit to China.
