About:China Family Reunion Visa

certificate of kinship with grandparents?

How can I prove my relationship with my grandparent who wrote the invitation letter? What documents can I use to prove that?

Your grandparents need to go to the local police office which can issue a certificate with a common seal to prove your kinship.

My wife and kids are going to get the Q1 visa through her parents in Guangdong Province. However, we are going to live in Shanghai but visit her family often while there. Does it matter where in China we apply for the residence permit and where we spend the majority of our time?

You will need to apply for the residence permit in Guangdong and it doesn't matter where you spend the majority of your time in China later.
