240 hours visa free transit

For US passport holders, can he make a trip flying from US to chongqinq for 4 nights stay, then take high speed rail to zhangjiajie for 4 nights and then take high speed rail exit mainland china to hong kong?

Yes, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. You should just have two details in mind:

1. Your flight from US to Chongqing is not allowed to have a stop in Hong Kong of any kind because it is Hong Kong where you will exit to after mainland China visit.

2. You will have to buy your Zhangjiajie to Hong Kong train ticket even before you depart from US. It is highly advisable to have it as a printout or at least as a screenshot. You will be asked to present it in US at the time of your check-in and upon landing at the first airport in mainland China. Have a nice visit to China
