Part 1:
Matt, in general, this is possible, but it is highly advisable to spend an overnight in Hong Kong before you proceed to the border to get a new 5 days visa. However, I would not suggest you to do that because of some kind of uncertainty that always follow this option. I have much better solution for you, if you are willing to do that. Perfectly legal and convenient. So, you will take a ferry from Hong Kong to Macau. As soon as you arrive in Macau, you will take the first ferry to Shekou in Shenzhen. Here is the point. You are formally arriving from one territory (Macau) and after your stay in mainland China you will return by train to Hong Kong as a third territory. This is perfectly eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need a visa of any kind. As you can see you are allowed to stay for 10 days in mainland China and you are not limited to Shenzhen city limits only, but you can travel around many parts of China, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing included. Also, it is important to emphasize that the day of arrival is not counted against your 10 days in mainland China, so if you arrive in mainland China on September 12, that day is not counted and the first day of your stay is September 13. In other words, by entering on September 12, you are allowed to stay in mainland China until September 22. The only tiny drawback is that you will have to buy a train ticket for your return to Hong Kong even before you depart toward mainland China because you will be asked to present one in both Macau before your boarding for Shekou and also in Shekou when you disembark there.
