About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

240-hr visa free transit

Hi, I hold a US passport. My route is taking a high rail from Kowloon (HK) to Guangzhou then a flight from Guangzhou to Yichang. Then flight from Chongqing to HK. The entire journey is 7 days. Would this qualify under the 240-hr visa free rule? Thank you.

You have to do some corrections within your itinerary in order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. As you probably know, you cannot depart from Hong Kong toward mainland China and after your stay there return back to Hong Kong. This is not a transit and is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. However, with just a couple of corrections you can make your itinerary an eligible one. So, instead of Hong Kong toward China, you will take a ferry from Hong Kong to Macau and immediately depart from Macau toward Shekou (neighborhood in Shenzhen) by a direct ferry line. This ferry line is eligible under 240 hour visa free transit. When you have reached Shekou (Shenzhen), you will proceed by train to Guangzhou and then according to your original plan. After your planned stay in mainland China, you will return by plane to Hong Kong by plane as you have originally planned. Also, it is important to have a flight ticket from Chongqing to Hong Kong already bought even before you depart from Macau toward mainland China because you will be asked to present it at the time of your boarding the ferry in Macau and also upon your arrival by ferry in Shekou. So, if you make this change and use Macau as your immediate point before mainland China, your itinerary will be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. It is important to understand that the very basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit clearly requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). So, Macau - mainland China - Hong Kong is eligible while Hong Kong - mainland China - Hong Kong is not eligible. Have a nice visit to China.
