About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Citizen with following itinerary USA - China - Japan - china - USA

My family of four is traveling from USA to Beijing (4 days) to Shanghai (3 days) to cruise to Japan(7 days) to Shanghai(1-2 days) to USA. Will we qualify for the 240 hour visa free entry?

Yes, your entire itinerary is eligible for 240 hour visa free transit twice. You should just take care that within your itinerary you do not have Japan as your immediate point between US and China and on your final return between China to US. Japan in the middle (by cruise) is perfectly fine. People sometimes omit short transit transfers in the countries/territories before mainland China, but they count as well. So, your US to China and China to US flights have to be of direct, nonstop type. Have a pleasant visit to east Asia.
