About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

query on transit in Hong Kong on incoming flight

I am travelling UK - Chengdu - Hong Kong but the UK to Chengdu flight transits Hong Kong. I will not stopover in Hong Kong. Does this qualify for 240 hour visa free transit when I arrive at Chengdu?

So, your itinerary is UK - Hong Kong - Chengdu - Hong Kong - UK. Unfortunately, the very basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit says that the only thing that really matters is that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese visit have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) and your immediate points are in one territory - Hong Kong. In order to perform this itinerary you would have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance or to alter/adapt your itinerary by inserting a third country/territory. If you only can alter one of your Hong Kong - Chengdu - Hong Kong legs and replace it with Macau - Chengdu or Chengdu - Macau, that would be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Macau and Hong Kong are very close to each other and the solution of this kind would be convenient. Now, the main issue is if you can alter/adapt your itinerary. I'm sorry for bringing you these, not so convenient news, but even this is better than being refused boarding in UK or Hong Kong.
