About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK - Beijing - Chongqing - HK - UK

Hi, we are from UK and Singapore so part of the list of countries that can enjoy the China 240-hour visa exemption.

1. If we fly from UK to Beijing, are we allowed to travel within China before going to HK? Will we only be able to visit the cities on the visa exemption list?
2. When we leave China for HK, must we leave via one of the eligible ports as part of the 240-hour visa exemption?

Xin, Singaporean passport holders can enter China visa-free, so your Singapore friends don’t need to consider these issues; for the rest members from the UK, UK – Beijing – Chongqing – HK is eligible for 240h visa free transit.
1) If you want to enjoy the transit policy, heading to the third country or region like HK is a must after Mainland China where you can only visit cities on the visa exemption list. But 24 provinces are included in total, which should meet your needs.
2) Yes, you must.

The citizens of Singapore do not have to bother with 240 hour visa free transit visa or similar because they can enter, stay, explore and enter/exit mainland China for up to 30 days absolutely visa free. The citizens of UK are eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and they are free to arrive from UK to Beijing and then travel to the majority of the places within mainland China by train, bus, plane, as they wish. 240 hour visa free transit scheme has abolished previous provincial borders limitations or similar that were relevant during 144 hour visa free transit era. In other words, you can travel Beijing to Xi'an to Chengdu to Guangzhou and then exit mainland China to Hong Kong by taking a train or a ferry. In any case, you should have in mind that you will have to buy your train ticket to Hong Kong even before your board the plane toward mainland China (Beijing). You will be asked to present one in both UK and upon your landing in Beijing. It is advisable to print out that train booking confirmation in order to expedite the relevant procedures. One words of warning for UK citizens. Your flight from UK to Beijing is not allowed to have a layover in Hong Kong immediately before Beijing. Have a nice visit to China.
