About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong- ShenZhen- Hong Kong

I have friends coming to visit me in Shenzhen. They will be flying from Japan to Hong Kong, then taking the ferry to Shekou port in Shenzhen. Afterwards, can they take the ferry back to Hong Kong to depart back to Japan, or does the departure point have to be different than the entry?
Also, can they take the high speed rail to Hong Kong or is that unacceptable?

M Calhoun, since your friends plan to visit Shenzhen only, their best solution is to apply for a 5 days Shenzhen visa on arrival right at the border crossing. They are advised to use Lo Wu / Luohu border crossing and to arrive there at least at 08:30 because Luohu visa office opens at 09:00. It is better to arrive there in the morning in order to avoid major queues. The alternative to this border crossing is definitely to take a ferry from Hong Kong or HKIA to Shekou (Shekou visa office opening hours: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30). Please, have in mind that they cannot travel by a direct train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, however, they can use it for their return to Hong Kong.

They will bring their valid passports and they will fill out the relevant form at the border crossing. They will take photos in the same place and pay affordable fee of 130 CNY by card. All major cards are accepted. After the visa is issued, they can proceed into Shenzhen, but keeping in mind that this visa limits them to Shenzhen city limits.

After they are over with a visit to Shenzhen, they can return back to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing they want and also any mean of transport, high speed train from Shenzhen to Hong Kong West Kowloon station included.
