If you enter China through Beijing and intend to transfer to a domestic flight on the same airline, immigration, baggage reclaim and recheck-in is usually necessary. If however, you will transfer to continue your flight outside China, these days they seem to have arranged it so passengers don't need to recheck-in, although there are passport and security checks on the way to the gate. PreCovid, I was passing through BJ on an international transfer and I think they hadn't yet set it up this way. My first flight was delayed and my luggage took a while to reclaim and the check-in was already closed when I got there. They arranged for my suitcase to be accommodated (having initially scolded me for turning up to check-in late) but I needed to remove my liquids from it.
