We are traveling to Shanghai via air from the UK, wanting to stay for 4 days in the city before boarding a cruise ship to Japan in Shanghai port. We return to shanghai after 5 days for 12hrs and then re-board the cruise for a further 5 days to Japan and S. Korea before arriving back in Shanghai where we will stay for a further 36hrs before traveling by air from Shanghai back to the UK. Can we use the 144hr transit Visa application at each re-entry (also assuming the 12 hours between cruises would be visa free due to the short amount of time) or are there limits on the amount of times you can get these transit visas within a short time period?

Your first segment:UK - Shanghai - JapanIs fine and you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. Please, be aware that this is not a transit visa or any kind of visa, this is just visa free transit. Here you should have in mind that your cruise is not allowed to have as its first port of docking in mainland China. The very first port of docking has to be outside the mainland China!Your second segment:Japan - Shanghai - JapanIs not eligible because you cannot have the same country as an immediate point before and after mainland China (Shanghai in your case).However, if your cruise has the following route:Japan - Shanghai - South Korea - JapanThen you are fine and your 12 hour stay in Shanghai will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit.Your third segment:Japan - Shanghai - UKIs eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. You should always have in mind that the immediate points before and after Shanghai have to be in two different countries! Also, it is not allowed to have a mainland Chinese stop immediately after or before Shanghai!So, check carefully and I hope that your entire itinerary will be covered by both 24 and 144 hour visa free transit.
