Ana, if Shanghai is the only town in China and your entire transit time shorter than 24 hours, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa.

Since you have expressed a wish to exit the airport and make some sightseeing, your first step after landing will be to approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight itinerary and your accommodation booking if you intend to have a nigh spent in the hotel. This application is free of any charge. After a short check, you will be granted a permit and you will head to the immigration in order to formally enter China. When you have exited the airport, you are free to enjoy your time on your own and to return on time to catch your onward flight to Thailand. Basically, this is it. Have a nice journey.
