Simon, there are two answers to your inquiry based on your citizenship:
1. If you are a Malaysian citizen you can transit, enter and stay in China absolutely visa free for a period of up to 15 days. In other words, if you are a Malaysian citizen you should not bother yourself about any single detail in this regard. You will just fill out the arrival card that will be dispensed on board the plane that will land in Shenzhen where you will tick transit box. Upon landing you will head directly to the immigration and after that collect your luggage and when the time comes you will make completely new check-in and head to the gate of your connecting flight out of China.
2. If you are a citizen of a country that needs a visa to enter China, you will rely on 24 hour TWOV. So, when you land in Shenzhen, the first thing you will do is to approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit, please remember that name. This application is free of charge and here you will present your flight tickets and your accommodation confirmation if you plan to stay in the hotel overnight. Soon after that your permit will be granted and you will head to the immigration. After that you will spend your free time as you wish and then head to new check-in and to the gate for your flight out of China.
I hope this helps.
