About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hr visa free to Chongqing from Shanghai

Hi, we are traveling from Sweden and we would like to take the 144 hr visa free transit opportunity to go to Shanghai and Chongqing, before we depart from Shanghai back to Sweden. Can we travel to Chongqing from Shanghai with that visa?

Sorry to tell you that you are not eligible for the 144 visa free transit because of the unqualified route which is Sweden - China - Sweden, not a transit; and also, you can only stay in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, a combined available area for the 144 if using the 144. Chongqing is another available area and the 144 only allows to travel in one area.

Unfortunately, this is not possible to accomplish under 144 hour visa free transit scheme. The very basic rule of 144 hour visa free transit scheme requires that the immediate points before and after a mainland Chinese destination have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau).

In other words, you can fly, for example:

Europe - Shanghai - Hong Kong

or

Europe - Shanghai - Seoul

However, you cannot have two mainland Chinese destinations in a row. In order to visit both Shanghai and Chongqing visa free you could use some creativity although that usually implies higher expenses, for example:

Europe - Shanghai - Taipei - Chongqing - Europe (there are direct, nonstop flights from Chongqing to Budapest, Paris, London). Like this you would be eligible for for 144 hour visa free transit twice, once in Shanghai and the second time in Chongqing. Whatever you decide I wish you a pleasant journey.
