Hainan visa free

Hi my husband is brazillian passport, we are flying from auckland to beijing for transit 3 hours and then go to hainan island stay for 7 days, is it possible? As i know it is allowed to stay in hainan for 30 days but i saw other comments it said you need to have direct flight if you want to have 30 days transit visa? Thank you
