You do not need any kind of visa because you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit. You will do the following:
- Before your landing an arrival/departure card will be dispensed on board of your plane, before your landing in Guangzhou. You will fill out the cards to minimize the waiting time at Guangzhou airport formalities.
- Immediately upon landing you will approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets and your accommodation booking confirmation. This application is free of any charge.
- After a short check, you will be granted a temporary entry permit, you will proceed to the immigration and proceed to the city on your own.
Just one detail. As far as you know, the Chinese government has announced visa waiver for Australian citizens, but so far the date is not yet published. In case if you travel when the visa waiver starts, Australian citizens will not have to apply for a temporary entry permit, but UK and Brazilian citizens will have to. In any case, you will be fine and enjoy your time in Guangzhou together.
