earliest I can apply for a tourist visa.

Hello,
I am planning a trip to China arriving on the 19th October and wanted to know the earliest I can apply for my tourist visa, as I will be out of the UK from 8th August.
I was thinking to come to the embassy around the beginning/mid July, but am worried this is too early.
