Is it safe for a Caucasian Canadian to travel to Beijing ? What are the Visa requirements for short-term tourism ?

It's very safe in China. You don't need to worry about it at all. Visa requirements for L visa:PassportVisa Application Form and PhotoProof of legal stay or residence statusDocuments showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China.
