Safety and visa requirements

It's very safe in China. You don't need to worry about it at all.

Visa requirements for L visa:
Passport
Visa Application Form and Photo
Proof of legal stay or residence status
Documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China.
