Have 26 hours lay over and we’ll stay in a hotel outside the airport , are they going to give us a visa at the airport flying back to USA

Since you are US citizens you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa for your journey. In other words, layovers longer than 24 hours are counted under 144 hour visa free transit scheme, so you will just use this phrase. Upon your landing in Shanghai the first thing you will do is to approach transit counter where you will formally apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to cross the immigration by presenting your flight tickets and, if you have, your hotel booking confirmation. This application is free of any charge. After a short check, you will be allowed to exit the airport and to enjoy your time in Shanghai on your own.
