About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

US Passport - Travel from US --flight--> Guangzhou --ferry(?)--> Hong Kong --flight--> US

I am planning to fly from US to Guangzhou for 6 days, travel to Hong Kong for 3, and fly from Hong Kong back to the US.

Does the flight have to be direct, no connections from the US to Guangzhou?
What are the transportation options from Guangzhou to Hong Kong that is valid for the 144 transit free period and is also cost-efficient? I was planning to take the ferry, but I was wondering if there were other options.

Thank you!

Your flight from US to Guangzhou does not have to be a direct one. You can have a landing of different length in Japan, South Korea even Taiwan, but you are not allowed to have a landing of any kind within mainland China. So, your flight to Guangzhou has to be a nonstop one from a country different than mainland China or Hong Kong because Hong Kong is your next destination.

Your itinerary is definitely eligible and you can take a ferry from both Guangzhou (Nansha port south from Guangzhou) or from Shenzhen (Shekou port) and several other ports, but this ferry has to be a direct one. Best options are with CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company. Now, you will have to buy your ferry ticket in advance through CKS website, print it out and have that ticket at hand as a proof that you will really be in a transit. Also, you will have to take exactly that ferry you have bought your ticket for.

By the way, under 144 hour visa free transit you are allowed to travel and stay within the entire Guangdong province.
