Well, the problem is that if you want to use 144 hour visa free transit, then your itinerary is not eligible for any visa free transit scheme and you need a visa obtained in advance. The explanation is simple... Under 144 hour visa free transit you are not allowed to have two mainland Chinese destinations in a row. So, you can land in just one, being it Guangzhou or Shanghai, but definitely not both of them.
The reason for this is based in the fact that all the passengers arriving in China pass the immigration and customs check at the very first stop upon entry in the same way as it is done in US. So, when you cross the immigration and customs in Guangzhou you have already entered China and all your next moves are domestic. This is not allowed, so you are advised to either change your flight plan or to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. I'm sorry.
