About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visiting HK on China Transit Visa

I have a layover in Guangzhou of 19 hours travelling between Sydney and London. I am thinking about taking a bullet train to Hong Kong in this time, but unsure about the rules regarding the free transit visa. Am I able to travel to and from HK from mainland China with the transit visa, or do I need a proper visa to enter China twice during my layover?
I am travelling on a British passport.

Actually, you cannot visit Hong Kong in the way you have presented. When you travel via Guangzhou you will be allowed to exit the airport and to visit the city and to have an overnight there, but you cannot visit Hong Kong because for something like this, you would need to have a layover in Guangzhou longer than 24 hours or to be precise you would have need to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Even then, you would have to take a ferry from Shekou port in Shenzhen and return to Guangzhou from Hong Kong by plane. As you can see, this plan is impossible to accomplish because of several factors, so I recommend you just to focus on Guangzhou... One more detail... In order to be allowed to exit the airport in Guangzhou, you will apply for a temporary entry permit at transit counter. Here you will present your flight tickets as well as your hotel booking confirmation. This application is for free and the permit will be granted to you.
