About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Citizen Visiting China - Tourist Visa Questions

Can I go from USA -> Hong Kong/Macau -> Hunan -> Shanghai -> back home to USA, without a Visa?

I'll be in HK/Macau for 3 days and Hunan/Shanghai for 7 days.

All of the available info is very confusing and I'm seeing conflicting things. Any guidance is much appreciated!

Actually, the reality is quite simple. The basic requirement is that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). Consequently, your idea/itinerary Hong Kong/Macau - mainland China (Hunan and Shanghai) - US is definitely and undeniably eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. It is essential that your flight Shanghai - US does not have a landing of any kind in Hong Kong/Macau. Also, when entering mainland China you need to arrive at the border crossing with already booked Shanghai to US flight in hands because you will be asked to present it as a printout or as a screenshot on your smartphone. Have a nice visit to China.
