About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Thailand-Singapore-Vietnam (cruise)-Hong Kong (cruise)-Shanghai-Malaysia(flight)-Thailand (flight)

Hello, I'm a USA citizen, planning to travel to Thailand for 9 days April 2024. I will then fly from Phuket to Singapore, then board a cruise which will then make stops in Vietnam, Hong Kong and ends in Shanghai on 4/26 7am arriving at Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal No.1 Baoyang Rd Shanghai. I want to stay 2 nights at a hotel in Shanghai, then depart on an Air Asia flight from PVG- Pudong Intl at 1:35 am. The flight has a stop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and returns to Phuket, Thailand. Does this qualify for the 144 hour visa exception?

Yes, it does. The main segment of your entire journey is this one:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Malaysia

So, if you do not have any additional landing or port call within this central segment, you are definitely and undeniably eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area and you do not need any kind of visa.

Within this scheme it is important that the immediate points before and after your Chinese destination are in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you have presented, your itinerary is eligible.
