Actually, 5 days start counting from 00:00 the day following the entry date. In other words, your 5 days stay will not start counting until 00:00 (12:00 am) of January 5th and you will be covered by visa until January 9 until 24:00 (11:59 pm). To conclude, your plan is perfectly doable and you have every right to take a flight departing on January 9th at 03:00 (3:00 am). Just a couple of advises - information:
- You are advised to arrive at the border crossing at the time of visa office opening, i.e. at 09:00 because this type of visa is in a high demand. If you ask me, I would be taking the first ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen because the entire procedure is least stressful. If you decide to do that, you should know that Shekou crossing visa office opening hours are: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30. If not Shekou, then go to Lo Wu (Luohu).
- The price of Shenzhen VOA for New Zealand citizens is relatively steep 736 CNY because of the reciprocity.
- You can take a flight from Shenzhen, but please take care that your flight has to depart from Shenzhen on a nonstop flight out of mainland China. In other words, your flight is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China when flying on Shenzhen VOA.
