Is a round trip ticket needed for L visa holder?

Hello, I have a category L Chinese visa from 2018 (10 year visa). I currently have a one way ticket for jan 21 and was planning to buy my return ticket after 2-3 weeks of staying in China.

Do I need to buy my flight leaving China prior to my Jan 21 departure? Or, can I buy it at a later date?
