OK, you are arriving in Beijing at 12:30 and you depart at 00:55 the next day, just to be clear :)
If you are a French citizen, you do not need to bother with any single formality because since December 1st, French citizens, along with 4 other EU countries can travel to China visa free. In other words as if you were traveling to UK. You need your passport and that's all.
If you are an Australian citizen, you will be definitely covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Being in transit does not change too much regarding the citizenship with the exception that French citizen can exit the airport freely having just a passport in his hands, but Australian has to apply for a temporary entry permit that is for free at 24/144 hour visa free transit counter. Never mind...
Upon your arrival you will pass the immigration (24/144 hour transit counter if you are Australian before immigration), then you will take a free shuttle bus plying the route between T2 and T3 every 10 minutes or so... Upon arrival at T3 you will again pass through immigration and reach your boarding gate. In case if you fly on a single ticket and your luggage is tagged all the way to your final destination, you can also make a stroll in Beijing. The entire procedure that I was explaining will take roughly 90 to 120 minutes.
