About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK-Dubai-Guangzhou-Hong Kong

Hi - I’m planning to fly from UK to Guangzhou with 3 hour stopover in Dubai airport then train to Hong Kong. Will this fit the visa free rules or do I have to fly to Hong Kong? Thanks.

Actually, taking a train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong is not eligible way of travel any more. It is the ferry that you should use. In other words, you will buy your ferry ticket through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website in advance, print out your ferry ticket and have it with you in both UK/Dubai and Guangzhou. You can use several departure ports located in and around Guangzhou to take the ferry to Hong Kong.

Also, you should have in mind one very important detail... You have to stay at least a minute longer, looking at scheduled arrivals and departures, than 24 hours in Guangzhou to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and to be allowed to perform this transit.

If you want to stay for a shorter period of time than 24 hours, then you will have to fly from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. If you will stay for more than 24 hours, you are allowed to stay and explore the entire Guangdong province.
