About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Auckland - Guangzhou - Seoul

Hi. Would this trip be eligible for the 144 transit visa in Guangzhou?

12/10: Auckland (AKL) - Shanghai (PVG) - Guangzhou (CAN). It would be on China Eastern. I would not be leaving the airport in Shanghai. I would just be transiting through Shanghai Pudong with a 3 hour 25 minute layover.

12/13: Guangzhou (CAN) - Seoul (ICN). This is a nonstop flight on Korean Air.

Also on my return trip from Seoul to Auckland. I was thinking of booking it on China Eastern with a 10 hour layover in Shanghai. Would I be able to leave the airport on another 144 transit visa? Or am I only eligible for 1 transit visa?

12/15: Seoul (ICN) - Shanghai (PVG) - Auckland (AKL). Thank you!!

Your first segment is not eligible because you cannot have two mainland Chinese stops in the row. This detail absolutely disqualifies you from 144 hour visa free transit. When a passenger travels through China via two or more stops in a row, she/he is allowed to travel only on 24 hour visa free transit and to accomplish her/his transit within 24 hour time frame.

Your second segment is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit because your entire stay within mainland China in this case is just 10 hours. Here you do not need any kind of visa and you can also apply, upon landing in Shanghai for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport. This permit is for free. However, you have to know that the issuing of this permit depends exclusively on discretionary decision of the airport authorities on a day. So, you could be allowed to exit the airport, but also denied. You can never be certain when you travel on 24 hour visa free transit.

So, you should adapt your first segment to have just one landing or better to say, just one area of China within your itinerary in order to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit or to obtain a visa in advance.
