About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello,
it would be very helpful for me and my girlfirend if you might definitly inform us about the following:
We are italian and on our way to Manila and back we will make two stop overs in China:
Milan - Beijing ( 12.30hrs stop over) ------manila
Manila -Chengdu ( 11hrs stop over) Chengdu -Beijing ( 4 hrs stop over) -----Milan
On both stop overs we would love to visit the cities, especially on the way back would like to visit the Panda breeding Center in Chengdu.
Which permit should we ask at the customs? And, the most important is it secure that we are going to get that especially in Chengdu?.

Riccardo, you are definitely covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need a visa at all. This is the first and the most important detail.

Now, to be allowed to exit the airport is another thing when flying on 24 hour visa free transit. For your first transit, in Beijing, you will approach, immediately after your landing in Beijing, to 24/144 hour visa free transit where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. This permit is free of any charge, but here you have to know, the granting of permit depends entirely to discretionary decision of airport authorities, so you can receive both positive and negative outcomes. Authorities in Beijing are very strict, so you will really not know the outcome until the very moment when they will tell you that. I would say that your chances are half/half to be allowed to exit the airport.

As far as your return trip is concerned, this is not a problem at all. You will do in Chengdu the same thing as you will do in Beijing, but here the permit will be definitely issued because your next flight is a domestic one, so you really have to exit the airport or better to say formally enter into China. In other words, you will be definitely able to visit Panda breeding center in Chengdu. I advise you just to check the best transport option from and back to the airport not to miss your flight to Beijing. You have enough time, but just to be on a safe side.

Dear Borut, thank you so much for your kind and helpful reply. I understand that we should not have problems in Chengdu for a visit, being also in need to go from Tianfu airport to Shiangliu for domestic flight before getting back to Italy. We appreciate this. So in this case ( being layove 11 hrs) should we apply for 24hrs temporary permit or which one?
Also, I understand that Beijing authorities are more strict. For that layover we have 13 hrs before next flight to Manila. I have one question, we are very interested to vist Tienamen square and more specifically Mao Tse Tung mausoleum , very representative of chinese culture an history. Do you think this information could help to get the permit once we are going to apply with the officer?Thanks a lot for your kind additional suggestions
