1. Your friend can offer you an invitation letter and it doesn't matter. 2. Are you a Canadian passport holder? If yes, then the bank statement is not necessary. 3.Generally, it will be given back to you.

I am not Canadian. I am an international student. So how much would you recommend I show in my bank statement?

Generally, if you need to provide the bank statement will be decided by the visa center. Anyway, since you have an invitation letter, you can submit these documents first.
