About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Twice in 2 weeks 72 hours visa free

Hi, I hold an Italian passport and I will stop in Shanghai for 18 hours transit flying from Milan to Bangkok, then after 15 days, I will stop for 16 hours in Beijing, flying from Bangkok to Milan.
In order to visit both Chinese destinations, am I eligible for a 72 h visa free transit in Shanghai and then one more 72 h visa free transit once landed in Bejing, 2 weeks later, please? Do I need also to inform the airline previously, while checking in ?May I register it in the police station inside the airport, if I won't go in a hotel during my stay? Thank you for prompt response

There is no 72 hour visa free transit, but 144 hour visa free transit in both Beijing and Shanghai. However, since your transit times are shorter than 24 hours, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa and you will just say at the time of check-in that you are flying to Bangkok via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit.

Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit in order to be allowed to exit the airport. This application is absolutely free and you will present your flight ticket. After a short check, airport officials will tell you if your entry permit is granted or not. You have to know that issuing of the permit is not that belongs to your rights, but it is based on discretionary decision of airport officials. In other words, you should be ready for both outcomes. It is known that authorities in Shanghai are more liberal than those in Beijing. I will tell you that your chances tend to diminish when you do not plan to sleep outside the airport.

If you are allowed to exit the airport, you do not need to register if you return back to the airport within 24 hours. In any case, I wish you luck :)
