I can think out only one solution if you cannot obtain a China visa beforehand.

If your destination in China is eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit, you may try the 144-hour visa-free transit as long as your itinerary can be like: A - (B) China - C.
A and C must be different countries while B can only be one of the transiting areas of China. You may create an itinerary to use a few 144-hour transit, like USA - Shanghai (144-hour) - HK - Beijing (144-hour) - South Africa.
