About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

20 hours transit in Beijing Captial Airport - 1 adult 2 kids

Hi, my kids (5 & 10) and I hold Malaysian passport and will be transiting through Beijing to Geneva. The layover time is 20 hours. We would like to visit some places in Beijing. Understand that we can apply for 24 hour free transit visa.

Will there be any chances where it will be rejected and we end up having to stay in the airport for 20 hours?

Please advise.

Good question. It is important to say that as Malaysian citizens having 20 hours long layover in Beijing, you have every right to travel without a visa or better to say, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit. However, traveling without a visa really does not automatically allows the exit from the airport (airside) because the person who would like to exit, has to apply for a temporary entry permit upon landing at 24/144 hour visa free transit counter. This application is for free and since your layover is really very long and you travel with young children, your chances to be granted a temporary entry permit are really very good. However, nobody can guarantee that the permit will be granted because its granting depends solely on discretion right of the airport officials. If I were you, I would be taking my chances.

Thanks for your reply. Did you mean you wouldn't take the chances? I guess, getting the actual travel visa is the safest bet?

Quite the contrary, I think your chances to get a temporary entry permit are very good and if I were you I would not bother with a visa, but would definitely take my chances. I am quite certain that you will be allowed to exit the airport. There is a small chance that you will be rejected, but that chance is practically negligible. The detail that is important is to book your accommodation in advance, to print it out and to have that printout ready to be presented to the authorities.

Understand. I will be booking a layover package to visit some places of interest in Beijing. Hopefully it can replace the accommodation confirmation.
