I am booking an upcoming business trip. I look to fly from US to Germany then onto China to visit Nanjing. Will I be able to travel under the 144 Hour Visa Free Travel or would I need a Visa?

It depends on your specific itinerary. If your itinerary is US - Germany - Nanjing - US and there is no other stop in mainland China, then you are eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit.
