Studying under a Q2 Visa?

Hi, I'm going to a university to study for one semester. In theory, I should apply for an X2 Visa but I already have a multiple-entry Q2 Visa that's more convenient for me for a whole bunch of reasons.

Can I study under a Q2 Visa? I asked the university and they were pretty nonchalant about it, saying that I could come study with a Q2 Visa or switch it over to an X2 if I wanted. Is this illegal? A purpose of my trip *is visitng family* but I thought I could also improve my Chinese while I was at it.

Generally speaking, schools will require a X visa and it is better for you to change your visa at local entry and exit administration bureau.

Thanks for replying Molly!

Also, will getting it changed at an exit-entry bureau reset the Visa stay-duration time? i.e. When I get to China, stay for 30 days, then get an X2 Visa for 180 days, do I have 150 days left or 180 days left?
