Visa paperwork

My son is studying abroad in the fall. He has all the required documents from the school in China but they are emailed copies. Can he use those to get his Visa, or will he need the original papers?

Usually, the copies are fine. But sometimes the staff ask for original papers if they think there is something wrong with the copies.
