In Person requirement for visa application

My son is in college 2000 miles away from where we live in the U.S.
Can I apply for a visa for him to travel with us to China for July 2024 ?
Meaning that he would not travel to a Chinese Embassy in-person.

I'm afraid no. He can apply from the embassy or consulate which serves the area where his college is in, which should be much closer.
