What is expected from me to go to China with tourist Visa?

Sir/Madam, I am a student in China and I am currently in Ethiopia.
The school informed me that I should come to Beijing for the final defense, as an electronic signature on dissertation paper and format is not possible. But my Chinese visa has expired and they asked me if I can come to China with a tourist visa. So I need information from you to tell them. Thanks in advance
